The four-category scheme, and what it was built for
Active, passive, constructive, destructive: a coding grid that classifies responses for measurement, not a set of instructions.
The best-known artifact of the capitalization literature is a two-by-two grid. Responses are classified along one axis as active or passive, and along the other as constructive or destructive, producing four categories. The scheme appears in the 2004 work of Gable, Reis, Impett and Asher and is carried forward by most papers since.
It is a coding scheme. Its purpose is to let two different raters, or a questionnaire, sort a response into a category reliably enough for statistical analysis. It was not written as guidance and the original papers do not present it as such.
What each axis is doing
The active–passive axis registers the amount of engagement in the response: whether the listener elaborates on the event or acknowledges it minimally. The constructive–destructive axis registers valence: whether the response treats the event as good news or introduces qualification, competition, or dismissal.
Crossing them yields four cells, each of which the literature has a name for. The names are descriptive labels for cells in a matrix, not personality types, and researchers have consistently warned that individuals do not respond the same way across occasions — the same person occupies different cells on different days, which is precisely why diary designs are used.
How the categories get measured
Two instruments dominate. The first is a self-report scale, generally the Perceived Responses to Capitalization Attempts measure, in which one person rates how a partner typically responds. The second is behavioural coding of recorded conversations in a laboratory, in which trained raters assign responses to cells.
The two methods answer different questions, and this is where careful reading pays. A questionnaire captures a perception held by the discloser. Behavioural coding captures an observer’s classification of what was said. Studies that use both have reported that the two do not align perfectly, which is a finding about measurement rather than a defect to be smoothed over.
Known limits of the grid
- Shared-method variance. When the same person reports on a partner’s response and on relationship satisfaction, correlation between the two is expected on methodological grounds alone.
- Forced classification. Real responses can be ambiguous or carry several elements at once; the grid requires a single cell, and the reliability statistics reported in the papers reflect that difficulty.
- Short observation windows. Laboratory conversations run for minutes. What is coded is a sample of behaviour in a setting where both people know they are recorded.
- Ceiling on interpretation. An association between a coded category and a satisfaction measure is an association. The designs do not license claims about what produces what.
Why the scheme survived anyway
Coding grids persist when they are reliable enough to allow accumulation across studies, and this one has been reliable enough for that. Its survival is a statement about measurement convenience and comparability across papers, not a claim that the four cells carve the phenomenon at its joints. Later commentary, including the 2018 review by Peters, Reis and Gable, treats the scheme as a working tool with acknowledged coarseness.
Readers coming to the primary papers will find the grid introduced early and qualified late. The qualifications are where the interesting reading is.
